About the Event

The next event being hosted by the Postgraduate Forum will draw on current debate within academia, focusing on promoting the value of Postgraduate students and exploring how academics have dealt with issues of oppression within the academy. The day will focus on key areas where academics have experienced oppression, while opening the floor to discussion among delegates. The day will also give a platform to PG students to briefly present and talk about their own research with peers. Panel discussion(s) will focus on:

Gender and Sexuality

Dr. Roisin Ryan-Flood (University of Essex) will be speaking about her experiences in academia and her work on Queer research.

Tissot Regis (Leading Routes and Co-Founder of Podcast ‘Surviving Society’) will be speaking about his work on race and ‘whiteness’ and what that means for academia.

Dr. Jenny Thatcher will be speaking of her experiences of classism in academia. Jenny has been outspoken and honest of both her own experiences in the academy and the oppressive experiences of others who have experienced negativity due to classism.

Dr Sheelagh Daniels-Mayes will be speaking on their experiences as a vision-impaired, Aboriginal academic. Dr Daniels-Mayes works with Critical Race Theory and cultural responsiveness in their work with pre-service teachers and Indigenous Studies.
Hannah Bingham Brunner will also be speaking on her experiences within the Academy as both a PhD student and as a Faculty member.

PG presentations are not limited in areas/topics and are hoped to aid in developing confidence and experience. Presentations will be:

  • No more than 5 minutes
  • No more than 5 slides
  • Have time for discussion

Funded Places

We will also be offering 5 funded places. These are set aside for self-funded students.  Applicants will be placed in a lottery and the 5 successful applicants will be notified by the Thursday 31st October.
