BSA Statement on University and Colleges Union (UCU) Strike Action

The BSA is aware that many sociologists, as UCU members in (mainly pre-’92) Universities that participate in the USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme), have balloted to take strike action in defence of their pension scheme. As a result, strike action by UCU colleagues in 61 universities is scheduled to start this week.

The BSA understands the difficulties UCU members face and that not all sociologists are members of the UCU, the USS pension scheme, or the universities affected by the action, and they were not balloted. The UCU has provided advice, information and answers to FAQs about the proposed strike action and the ways in which members not striking due to their institutional location can contribute to hardship funds that will be primarily directed to those most severely financially hit by the action.
