In this interview, Professor England, of New York University and a former President of the American Sociological Association, speaks about her research on unintended pregnancies and how this differs according to the class of the mother. Professor England believes there are two reasons for unplanned pregnancies. One is direct structural reasons, such as poverty and lack of education. Another is that these structural reasons shape personal characteristics such as habits, preferences and values. These personal characteristics in turn affect women's ability to make concrete plans to go to the doctor, get a prescription for contraceptives and use them effectively.
