Title For Sociologies of Data
Media Type Microsoft Document
Category Conference Programme
Description Transcript of plenary by Evelyn Ruppert at the BSA Annual Conference 2014. The proliferation of data in our times is changing societies. This calls for practicing sociologies of data in ways that don’t treat data as though it were produced outside social relations and struggles. My objective in advocating for sociologies of data is to attend to the numerous actors, technologies, methods, practices and power relations that are ordering, classifying, excluding, enabling and making who we are, how we are governed and what we know about ourselves as subjects, citizens and societies. Although practicing sociologies of data is one way of approaching these issues, in an age when data have become intensely commodified, followed, and acted upon this has also become a responsibility.
